Overview

Natural latex,
by the centimetre

Choose one of four depths and one of six sizes, or send us your own measure.

Four things to know

  • 100% natural latex, from the sap of the rubber tree

Slabs of natural latex stacked on a white table in a latex factory: rows of pin holes on the top slab, open cells along the cut sides.
  • A quilted cover that comes off, with deep tufted sides

The corner of a white mattress cover, close: black piping round the top and rows of soft tufted cushions running away into the dark.
  • Make up the bed: a topper and pillows of natural latex

A bed in a black studio, seen from its foot: a white tufted latex mattress with the fleur-de-lis and Dominique Bienfait’s name on its foot end, standing on a low charcoal base. A white topper lies on it, its foot end folded back; two cream pillows and a bolster lie at the head.
  • Made by hand in Bangkok, with the maker’s name at the foot end

  • A smooth top, deep button-tufted sides and black piping; on the foot end, a black fleur-de-lis. Turn it by hand.

  • Organic cotton on the sleeping side, with lyocell in the fabric, from Jacquard Textile (Asia) in Thailand.

  • Le Classique 15 cm, L’Excellence 20 cm, L’Élite 25 cm, Le Master Luxe 30 cm: the same latex in each.

Inside

From the inside out

  1. A white mattress on a black floor, seen from a little above at three quarters: a smooth white top with black piping over tufted sides with the fleur-de-lis and the name.

    The cover comes off

Quilted, and removable. Under it, a thin inner cover of white fabric, and one block of natural latex, moulded in one or two layers.

  2. The top of the cover folded back to the middle of the mattress; the latex lies in its thin white inner cover, the pin holes showing through as soft grey dots, inside the tufted walls.

    Seven zones

The block is divided into seven comfort zones, and perforated, so air moves through the mattress.

Material

It begins
with a tree

Our latex comes from a supplier about two hours from Bangkok, in Thailand, the world’s first producer of natural latex.

to

The trees are tapped at night, in the coolest hours, when the latex flows best. In full sun it would thicken, so the harvest stops at first light.

Rubber trees in rows in a plantation, a dark cup tied under the cut on each trunk, soft light falling through the leaves from the left.
The trunk of a rubber tree close: white latex along the slanting cut in the bark and down a metal spout, and below it a cup full of white latex tied to the trunk with wire.

The latex runs from a slanting cut in the bark into a cup hung below, until it sets by itself, usually after about four hours. A tree gives latex for more than thirty years, and tapping takes it without felling the tree.

Six sizes, counted in centimetres

Width by length. Size names differ from one maker to another, so go by the centimetres, and measure the inside of your bed frame.

A longer bed, a narrower one, a berth on a boat: any other measure or shape, we make to order. Send us your measurements.

Making

Foamed, moulded,
then sewn by hand

The latex is foamed and moulded in a factory in Bangkok, then comes straight to our workshop, with no one in between.

In its mould, the foam is steamed for forty-five minutes.

  1. An old print: a man with white hair, glasses and a black apron, his hand on the bowl of a foaming machine whose two wire whisks turn in white latex.
Beaten with air the way egg whites are whipped: one volume of latex to seven of air.
  2. A block of perforated latex passing under a curtain of water jets, the water running over its rows of pin holes.
Out of the mould, each block is washed three times in clean water, then dried with hot air.
  3. Two hands guiding quilted white cotton under the needle of a black Bernina sewing machine.
