Today’s mattress on the black floor of a studio, under the branch of a rubber tree, a ray of light across its top: a white quilted cover, deep button-tufted sides and black piping, the handwritten name Dominique Bienfait on its foot end. On the trunk, a tapping cut and white sap running into a cup.

Four depths of the same latex

The latex and the seven zones are the same in all four. Only the depth changes, and the price with it.

Raw materials

The rubber tree is tapped at night, between midnight and four in the morning, when the latex flows best. It runs from a slanting cut in the bark into a cup, and one tree gives it for more than thirty years.

The making

In a factory in Bangkok the latex is beaten with seven times its volume of air, steamed forty-five minutes in its mould and washed three times. Our workshop makes the covers by hand and finishes every mattress.

He is French, came to Thailand in 1997 and has made natural latex bedding for more than twenty years.
